  3. VPS Control Panels: Simplifying Server Management Without Deep Linux Knowledge

Starting your own online project always comes with challenges — including choosing and managing a server.

In today’s digital landscape, the optimal solution is often a VPS — a virtual private server that offers clear advantages over physical ones. Most importantly, VPS hosting is suitable for almost any business project.

However, administering a virtual server is not simple — it requires technical knowledge and experience. To simplify this process for users without deep expertise in operating systems, especially Linux, a VPS control panel is used.
In this article, we’ll take a closer look at what these panels are for, how they work, and how to choose and install one based on your specific needs.

Why a Control Panel Is Needed for VPS. Advantages and Disadvantages of Use

Working through the console is actually quite difficult, at least at first, so specialists recommend that beginner administrators necessarily use control panels.

They primarily provide visual clarity of actions and their partial automation. Later, you can do without a control panel when you gain sufficient experience, but at the start of the first project, the tools of a control panel for monitoring, creating, and configuring objects are simply irreplaceable.

What Can Be Implemented with the Help of a Control Panel

From the main functionality of control panels, it makes sense to highlight the following points:

  1. Interaction with web servers.
     With the help of a control panel, the user easily sets up the operation of the site through automatic selection, installation, and configuration of the necessary software.
  2. Work with DNS records.
     The domain name of the site is registered in the control panel. In the future, the administrator can easily manage DNS records through the panel. The actions become intuitive and visually clear.
  3. Direct work with the site — from turning it on/off to placing content through the file manager built into the control panel.
  4. Implementation of corporate email.
     The control panel allows you to quickly create separate mailboxes within the corporate policy.
     Example: on the site xxx.com, the administrator creates an email for technical support — [email protected], and for the sales department — [email protected].
  5. An important task in administration is the separation of user rights on the site.
     This is especially relevant for corporate projects: managers, technicians, administrators, sales and marketing departments — all perform different tasks, and therefore access to site resources should also be different.
     In this respect, the control panel is indispensable, since it allows you to quickly and easily create and configure user accounts.
  6. Ensuring security.
     As a rule, control panels offer administrators a number of tools for configuring system security — from antivirus software and SSL certificates to paid services such as firewalls, etc.
  7. Working with databases.
     The user can potentially create as many databases as necessary for work, but only within the allocated amount of memory.

And one more point — control panels usually have schedulers like CRON.
 Through this tool, you can automatically perform various tasks, such as backups, running scripts at a given time, or updating software.

The advantages of using a control panel are simple and clear.
 First of all, it is the ease of operation, allowing a wide range of users — including those without deep knowledge of operating systems — to “enter” server administration.

Also, control panels allow you to automate many processes, which saves time and reduces risks due to the so-called human factor.

The disadvantages are not obvious, but they also exist.
It is necessary to understand that an experienced admin performs many tasks through the console faster — and most importantly — under full personal control.  For this reason, VPS control panels are usually used by beginners.

What to Pay Attention to When Choosing a Control Panel

The first thing to pay attention to when choosing a control panel for a VPS server is whether the product is free or paid.
 Each option has its own positive and negative aspects of use. Let’s analyze them in more detail.

Free Control Panels

Such control panels usually have open source code, which allows users to customize them “for themselves.”

Among the advantages of free offers, we can highlight the following:

  • no financial costs;
  • systems are quite flexible, allowing them to be configured for specific operating conditions;
  • a large number of various forums and chats where you can get any relevant information about modifying and configuring the control panel — “colleagues” will always come to help.

In general, free control panels are ideal for beginner administrators.

The disadvantages are obvious: limited functionality, the absence of dedicated technical support services, and the need to rely on forum members without any guarantee of professional assistance.

Paid Control Panels

These options are relatively inexpensive.

They are popular due to their objective advantages, among which it makes sense to name the following:

  • a larger number of functions and tools compared to free analogues;
  • the presence of technical support capable of providing professional help in any, even the most complex and unusual situations;
  • the possibility to integrate the control panel with other website management services;
  • the availability of automatic software updates.

The disadvantages are as follows: you have to pay regularly; service providers tend to impose unnecessary services and subscriptions, and not all beginner users are able to determine their importance; more powerful hardware is required, which also costs more; settings are limited, and there is no such flexibility as in products with open source code.

What Else to Pay Attention To

There are several other points that must be taken into account when choosing a control panel.

  1. Convenient interface.
     To increase the productivity and efficiency of the administrator’s work, the interface must be clear and as simple as possible.
     It is impossible to determine how convenient the interface is only by the name of the control panel.
     However, the Internet exists for this purpose — it is not difficult to find pictures and descriptions of a specific panel interface through a search engine.
     It is also possible, and even necessary, to visit specialized websites and forums to study the opinions of other users.
     There is one important point to remember — opinions on the ergonomics of the interface are often subjective, so in the end, you will still have to check everything through your own experience.
  2. Pay attention to the functionality responsible for website security.
     In today’s realities, the protection of a project — especially a serious, large, and promising one — is a mandatory condition for business success.
     Competitors and even ordinary attackers will not miss the opportunity to “take down” a website or gain access to client data from your database.
  3. The ability to quickly and easily interact with hosting.
     That is, to use its services and offers through the installed control panel.
     This will allow for more efficient management of web projects.

Overview of Popular Control Panels: Advantages, Disadvantages, and Who They Are For

Let’s look at the most popular control panels that are in demand among both beginner administrators and experienced professionals
 (although the latter, as we already mentioned, usually prefer working through the console — their opinions are still worth considering).

ISPmanager

A popular platform used by many large companies.
 It is a paid control panel that features an intuitive interface and broad functionality.

Among its advantages are:

  • fast and simple transfer of accounts between different hosting providers;
  • full Russian localization — not only of the interface, but also of technical documentation and help files;
  • open API;
  • plenty of video and text tutorials available online;
  • compatibility with various types of software, including operating systems;
  • professional support service and regular updates.

Among the disadvantages:

  • the need to pay;
  • closed source code — you cannot make independent modifications.

Also, for this control panel, the server must be clean at the moment of installation, which is not always convenient in practice.

cPanel / Plesk

These control panels are perfect for beginners. Their interfaces are simple — even somewhat basic.

A distinctive feature of these panels is their strong focus on security. Everything here is designed to ensure maximum protection.
 For this reason, many holdings and large corporations use these control panels.

Key advantages include:

  1. The ability to work under different operating systems, including Windows, which is important for some users.
  2. The ability to install SSL certificates via AutoSSL — free, fast, convenient, and reliable.
  3. Plesk offers 24/7 technical support.
  4. Convenient database management, not only via the familiar MySQL, but also through other tools, such as phpMyAdmin.
  5. Well-designed backup algorithms.

Disadvantages:

  • cPanel does not provide 24/7 support — only during business hours, which can be very inconvenient.
  • The product is paid, and compared to other options, it is relatively expensive.

VestaCP

Among the free options, this is probably one of the most popular control panels.

It provides functional solutions for all major administrative tasks — domain management, databases, user accounts, creation of email mailboxes, and much more.

Advantages of VestaCP:

  1. A wide range of functionality that allows solving almost any, even the most complex, tasks.
  2. The presence of an integrated firewall, which significantly increases the security of data stored on a virtual private server — even if the administrator does not take any additional protection measures.
  3. In the mail system, you can set a limit on the number of emails received from a single sender, which is actually a very good anti-spam measure.

Disadvantages:

  • Mainly suitable for small and medium-sized projects.
  • No technical support — you will have to look for information on your own.

CyberPanel

The main drawback of control panels in general, according to professionals, is their slow performance — some users simply don’t have the patience to wait for results.

However, this issue does not exist here at all. The panel is literally blazing fast — lightweight, quick, and with an intuitively clear interface.

Advantages:

  1. The product is free and open-source.
  2. It can — and should — be used on OpenLiteSpeed.
  3. Includes several very useful features such as automatic SSL, a cache manager, and integrated mod_security.
  4. The control panel allows you to deploy a web project from Git repositories directly online.

Disadvantages:

The main downside is weak support. There is plenty of information available online, but it often turns out to be unreliable — everything needs to be checked and double-checked before applying in practice.

Hestia Control Panel

One of the few free panels that, in terms of functionality, is almost on par with paid solutions.

It allows you to work with VPNs in full-scale mode, without limiting your capabilities.

Advantages of Hestia Control Panel:

  1. Very low resource consumption on the server for its own operation.
  2. High-quality backups — they start running literally right after the first launch of the control panel.
  3. Full configuration of Fail2ban is available.

Disadvantages:

There is no IPv6 support, which is not ideal in modern conditions (and, most importantly, is not planned). A firewall must be configured manually in advance. The main drawback is that it does not support managing multiple virtual servers simultaneously — whereas most other control panels usually offer this functionality.

aaPanel

A Chinese project that completely breaks the stereotype of low-quality software. Everything here is thoughtfully designed and built to a very high standard. The control panel stands out thanks to its well-implemented graphical interface.

Advantages:

  1. There is a built-in app store where you can choose almost any popular CMS available today.
  2. The functionality of the control panel can be significantly expanded by installing additional modular components.
  3. Works perfectly on OpenLiteSpeed.

Disadvantages:

  • No technical support, although developer documentation is available.
  • The panel is conditionally free — many important and essential features become available only after payment.

FastPanel

Developed by the Estonian company P.A.G.M. OU, this control panel for virtual private servers has gained considerable popularity. Firstly, it was one of the earliest panels, having appeared back in 2016, and users have simply grown accustomed to it.

Secondly, the project is completely free, although the developers initially planned to sell it — their marketing strategy later changed for this particular product.

Advantages:

  1. No limits at all on the number of hosted websites.
  2. Lightweight panel — takes up minimal disk space.
  3. User-friendly and ergonomic interface — nothing excessive, yet all essential functions are easy to find.

Disadvantages:

  • NodeJS is not supported.
  • Only WordPress is preinstalled automatically; other CMS platforms must be connected manually.
  • It is not possible to accurately measure how many specific resources the server consumes.

Webmin / Virtualmin

This is conditionally free software, though most of the core and important features are paid. There are many advantages, and they should definitely be considered when choosing a control panel:

  1. Extremely fast and simple installation.
  2. Supports installation of OpenLiteSpeed, Apache, and NGINX.
  3. Includes a built-in antivirus program (ClamAV).
  4. Provides comprehensive and detailed statistics for both major and minor parameters — in this regard, FastPanel falls significantly behind.
  5. Built-in DNS server support.
  6. Backups can be performed not only to the localhost, but also to cloud storage services.

Disadvantage:

The panel is quite difficult to master, especially given the lack of full technical support and limited documentation.

Ajenti

A Python-based control panel with minimal functionality, but extremely lightweight. It’s an excellent choice for small business projects and beginner administrators.

Advantages:

  1. Lightweight — the system barely feels its presence.
  2. Quick and almost automatic installation.

Disadvantages:

  • Difficult to create email accounts.
  • Limited number of plugins, and only basic ones are available.
  • Not suitable for large projects.

How to Install a Control Panel

Each control panel (CP) has its own installation procedure, but overall the steps are quite similar. The key point is that modern developers focus on maximum automation of the installation process. Still, some simple actions need to be done manually by the user.

Let’s look at an example of installing the ISPmanager control panel, assuming a VPS server is already up and running.

  1. Log in to your hosting provider’s website (for example, Reg.ru), then sign in to your personal account.
  2. In the list of servers (if available), select the one where the control panel will be installed.
  3. In the context menu that appears, find and select “Control Panels.”
  4. Choose ISPmanager.
  5. Next, determine the license type and the duration for which the service will be ordered.
  6. In the next window, you’ll be asked to choose between ordering only a license or reinstalling the system.
     Choose the second option if you plan to use the control panel.
  7. Finally, click “Order.”

What to Do After Installation

To begin with, you need to link a site or create a new one. For example, in FastPanel you can create it based on some CMS or “manually.”

The user also configures the control panel for their own needs, understanding the principles of operation and the tasks set. This should be done in accordance with the manufacturer’s documentation or based on the recommendations of experienced administrators.

Choosing a VPS for the Control Panel

In general, it would be correct first to choose a VPS taking into account your tasks and experience, and only then, on that basis, select a control panel. If you decide to do the opposite, it is important here to control such a point as compatibility. Servers do not support all control panels; in this case you will have to study the documentation yourself, but it is better to contact technical support right away. Specialists will help you decide on a choice or tell you about the compatibility of particular servers and control panels.

In conclusion, it must be said that control panels for VPS servers can be very different — paid and free; heavy and lightweight, simple and complex.

You need to approach the choice of a specific result as carefully and responsibly as possible. Do not rush to install the first option you come across or that is offered; look, think, and most importantly — consult. The optimal solution, from the point of view of making the right choice, will be to seek advice from an experienced, qualified specialist.

If the choice is made correctly, working with Internet projects will become simple and even bring a certain aesthetic pleasure — especially from the results of your own work.
